New Chief Data Scientist for PwC Finland
PwC Finland’s Data Analytics & AI team grew by one when Chief Data Scientist Shahab Anbarjafari joined PwC. As a distinguished researcher and professor, Shahab brings strong artificial intelligence expertise to the team.
At PwC, Shahab's job includes leading projects related to advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), quality assurance in technical implementation (for example development and modeling of algorithms) and commercialisation of services.
Companies still find it hard to trust AI
Many industries now hold huge amounts of data and data processing and learning from the past data has become essential.
“There is a huge interest in use of AI and computer vision in all kinds of businesses from ecommerce to wood industry, from security to education. In particular due to the existence of COVID-19 and the concept of work from home, the need for AI for monitoring and assessment has been increased,” says Shahab.
According to Shahab, the most common challenges for companies in utilising AI and data analytics are a lack of confidence in AI and the difficulty of accepting the need for necessary changes.
“It’s a similar situation compared to 80s and 90s when people were reluctant to use computers and the idea of everyday computer use was met with strong opposition. It is the job of experts working with AI to strive to make it understandable. For this purpose we need, for example, to set up more workshops where people can learn about AI,” Shahab notes.
An artificial intelligence multi-expert
Before joining PwC, Shahab worked as a professor of computer vision and applied machine learning at University of Tartu. He has also worked with AI research and technology and data development for several companies.
Shahab, who studied electrical and electronic engineering at Eastern Mediterranean University, is familiar with applied machine learning in particular applying computer vision in various industries and use cases.
“The most interesting thing about my job is everything! Sometimes it is difficult to even sleep because I'm so excited about all the things we are doing and have yet to do," Shahab says.
